Bachman’s Knot
Bachman’s knot works somewhat like
the Prusik. It works well on wet or icy
rope, with the screwgate karabiner
incorporated in the knot enabling it to
be released more easily. Note that the
strain can only be taken in one
direction and when tension is released
there can be a tendency for the whole
arrangement to slip down the rope.
The rope that forms the sling should
be no more than half the diameter of
the main rope. Whatever you do, do
not hang from the karabiner, it is only
to be used to ease the knot before
moving.
Pocket Guide to Knots & Splices
1 Put a loop or strop of smaller diameter
rope in a karabiner and lay it by the main
rope.
2 Bring the loop of rope round the main
rope and through the karabiner.
3 Repeat the wrapping round the main
rope and karabiner.
4 After one or two more wrappings the knot
is finished and should not slip when strain
is put on the loop. The karabiner is used
to ease the knot—IT MUST NEVER TAKE
ANY STRAIN.
