LEARNER EXPERIENCE
THE TRAINING & LEARNING COMPANY
TRAINING
Off the job - Off the job training is defined as training that is outside of your normal duties; this includes all
work undertaken that is not defined within your job description. Simply, over the duration of this qualification
you will develop a minimum of 20% new skills to support you within your current role. These new skills, when
implemented and practiced with the support of, or through shadowing of, a mentor, coach or trainer, are
defined as off the job learning. Through research conducted by the National Training Laboratories it has been
identified that there are various different methods of learning that are supported by different rates of retention.
Passive learning, through workshops, reading and observation have retention rates of 5-30%, whereas
participatory learning which actively encourages the learner to practice their learning has been highlighted as
having significantly higher retention rates spanning from 50-90% retention in comparison.
