DISTRICT 20-K1 LIONS AT MINI MARCH –

                                         LABOR DAY 2021

In 1967, the Caribbean Carnival, commonly known as the “Labor Day Carnival” was moved from Harlem to Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn.
The event is the largest Caribbean Carnival in North America. Many people from different parts of the world, especially individuals from
the Caribbean Diaspora make a special trip to New York to participate in this celebration.
                                                                                                    ”
Due to the challenges of COVID-19, this year’s celebration of Caribbean culture and heritage was scaled back to a “Mini March on
Eastern Parkway. Instead of walking for fifteen (15) blocks which was the “norm” in the past, participants only walked for six (6)
blocks;, from Nostrand Avenue to Washington Avenue. Very small groups representing various organizations also participated in this
      “Mini March” .
Members of District 20-K1 Lions Clubs were elated to have been selected to keep the tradition alive. Many news reporters from
different platforms of the media. provided local and national coverage of the event. District Governor Anthony Cochran was interviewed
by Channel 12 News and his remarks were broadcast throughout the day on said TV station. In attendance to support this cultural
demographic, were several politicians, city officials and other dignitaries including Senator Charles “Chuck” Schumer, Hon. Bill De
Blasio, NYC Mayor, Hon. Eric Adams, Brooklyn Borough President and Eric Gonzales, Kings County District Attorney. District Governor
Cochran had the opportunity to engage with all in “photo Ops.” (see photos below)
The parade started at 9:00 am and ended promptly at 11:oo am. The opening contingent was the dignitaries, followed by approximately
twenty-two (22) District 20-K1 Lions wearing their brilliant yellow vests and carrying the various flags of The Caribbean. Our proud
leader, District Governor Anthony Cochran headed the Lions’ delegation and he was supported by Lion Antonio Robles, Second Vice
District Governor. Clubs that joined the “Team” were Brooklyn Midwood Lions Club who had the largest group of participants, Brooklyn
Crown Heights, Brooklyn Metropolis, Queens Community, Central Brooklyn and Brooklyn Farragut Lions Club.
It would be remiss not to thank Lions Bernadette Hokai (Brooklyn Vanderveer-Glenwood Lions Club) and Michael Yansen, (Brooklyn
Crown Heights Lions Club), who were instrumental in teaming up and collaborating with the West Indian American Day Carnival
Association “WIADCA” which resulted in District 20-K1 Lions’ participation in the 2021 Labor Day Parade.
Kudos to Lions Bernadette Hokai and Michael Yansen for a job well done!!!!
A great example of “Growth Through Service, Teaming Together”.
