Chayei Adam - K’lal 142 - The Order of the Tekiahs
if he was blowing tekiah-shevarim-tekiah and erred and added a shevarim before
or after the teruah, or if he was blowing tekiah-teruah-tekiah and added shevarim
37
before or after the teruah, [he forfeits the entire set. [Similarly,] if he blew
shevarim and then after he finished, blew another shever [he forfeits the set] even
though one may blow four or five shevarim, that is only if he blows them all in the
38
same breath so that they can be considered a single [set of] shevarim. However
if he completed the shevarim properly by blowing three, and then he paused and
then added even one more shever, or if he blew teruah as he should - even if it is
only three slight sounds since some say that this is sufficient, as [we have written]
above, siman 6 - if so, since he stopped and completed the teruah, when he
returns to blowing another teruah, he is blowing two [separate] teruahs and
39
forfeits the entire set. He also forfeits the tekiah which he blew before the teruah
or shevarim and he must go back to the tekiah and begin that set anew. 40
]13[ If, when blowing tekiah-shevarim-teruah-tekiah, one made a mistake and
after blowing two shevarim began blowing a teruah and then realized, he must go
back and blow three shevarim again. [This is so,] even though when blowing
tekiah-shevarim-teruah-tekiah, we consider both shevarim and teruah as part of
the teruah. If so there is no foreign sound here and he should only need to blow
the missing shever to complete the necessary three, since he didn’t finish the
entire teruah. [Although] some authorities write that this is in fact the case, it is
nevertheless proper to act stringently like those opinions who hold that once he
began blowing a teruah, they can no longer combine with the next shever and we
41
are therefore lacking shevarim since one needs three of them. Nevertheless,
