a person’s mind at all; even if he is a midget he still feels afflicted [if he eats less
than this and if he eats] the size of a date, it will settle the mind of Og Melech
HaBashan, [at least] a little bit. All foods combine to make up the volume of a
date, provided that they are fit to eat, but one is not liable for eating food which
is not fit to eat. Food and drink [however] do not combine together. 13
]5[ If one ate, [stopped] and ate again, if there is less time than k’dei achilas
p’ras [between them], the two combine. If not, they don’t combine and he is patur

(exempt). Some say that ‘k’dei achilas p’ras’ is the [length of time it takes to eat]
the volume of four eggs, and others say it is [the volume of] three eggs. 15
]6[ Chazal understand that in order to be liable for drinking, [one must drink]
a mouthful. This doesn’t really mean a mouthful, but enough that if he shifts the

liquid to one side of his mouth, it will appear like his mouth is full. This amount
is not the same for everyone, but rather is subjective; a larger person will have a
larger size and a smaller person, a smaller shiur. It also is different from any other
liquid measurements of the Torah which is measured in terms of a revi’is.
However here, it is a halacha l’Moshe mi’Sinai that a person’s mind becomes a
little bit settled [when he drinks] enough to fill his cheek, which, for the average
person, is less than a revi’is. All liquids combine to make up this cheekful,
provided they are fit for drinking. 17
