Chayei Adam - K’lal 147 - Laws of Sitting in the Succah
]18[ Since we hold that one must dwell [in the succah] like he lives [in his house],
one who is distressed by sitting in the succah because of the cold or wind or foul
odor or anything else, and if he leaves the succah he will be spared from this

distress, he is exempt from the succah. Therefore, if someone’s candles were
extinguished on Shabbos, and he has candles lit at home, he may eat in his house

and is not required to go to his friend’s succah if there is great bother in doing so.
Similarly, if one is cold or doesn’t have adequate clothing, he is exempt. If the
quarters are too cramped for him to sleep in that he can’t stretch out his hands and
89
feet, see the Taz 640:5. A person cannot claim he is distressed unless it is
90
something that people are generally distressed by, and similarly, if [leaving the
succah] won’t spare him of this distress. However, if he can spare himself of the
91
distress [and remain] in the succah, he is obligated. Therefore, a mourner is
obligated to sit in the succah, because even in his house he won’t be spared [the
distress], and moreover, he could distract himself from the pain. If a wind is about to
extinguish his candles, he may spread out a sheet or item of clothing from the side,
and [regarding the] s’chach, it was explained above in the previous k’lal , siman 37. 92
