awareness and education. In this sense, a clear
difference may be mapped between domestic
and international tourists in India, where the
majority of domestic tourists, much larger in
number compared to the international tourists,
may find the more commercial and staged
forms of tourism acceptable, as opposed to the
international visitors who are typically in
search of an authentic experience. The quality
of tourism product in terms of interpretive
services and tourist facilities need to cater to
both and generate awareness towards
sustainable tourism in all.
The visitor is the consumer and his experience
is the main takeaway on which the success of
the destination depends. In case of alternate
tourism destinations, fragile landscapes and
social-economic and cultural scenarios, the
sensitivity and awareness of the visitor is
paramount if the negative impacts are to be
minimized and the destination is to be
developed as a sustainable one.
