Standards and Certification
Historically (and currently) some audits conducted
throughout different industries are performed by
companies that do not have independent oversight.
These “audits” are typically just inspections rather
than the in-depth accredited audits controlled by
independent oversight bodies.
Unfortunately, businesses are put at risk and suffer
when consumers, other companies and the
government believe these inspections provide the
same level of validation and review as accredited
certified audits.
Certification to a standard with independent oversight
helps ensure companies not only meet and maintain
conformance to one of the globally-accepted
standard(s), but also creates a visible commitment to
their customers and the marketplace. By becoming
certified, businesses can gain a competitive edge and
may find doors open to new domestic and
international clients.
In the last survey (2006) conducted for the
Independent Association of Accredited Registrars
(IAAR), “Greater Quality Awareness” and “Better
Documentation” (both 73%) were the internal benefits
most frequently cited by certified companies.
These were followed by:
Increased Efficiency (37%)
Positive Cultural Change (33%)
