Overview of Y2 Spring Term Part 1
            3. Consider why a non-fiction book is set out like this.

People sometimes want to find out about a particular creature, and they do not have

time to read the whole book. They just want to know if this book has anything to say
about jaguars, for example, and then find out what it actually says. All the
information is laid out in an orderly way, and you can dip into the book and then put it
away rather than read it from start to finish. Contrast this to a story book.

            4. Discuss whether this is a good idea ordering the book into different sections with
                 different headings.

God is not haphazard or confused; he is orderly. God made us in such a way that our

brains try to find order and make connections as we learn.

            5. Talk about God creating the world in an orderly way. He is very clear in his plans and
purposes for the world – to have a family of believers - and these plans are being
worked out in an orderly way. The world had a beginning and one day it will have an

                 end.

            6. Compare this to an author who creates a book having to decide what the purpose of

the book is to be. Is it going to be an information book, laid-out in a careful way to
help people learn? Or is it going to be a storybook, written to entertain the reader
or make them think? The answer to that question will make a difference in how the
                 book is laid-out.

            7. Let the children explore the classroom books and make lists of fiction books and non-
fiction books. More able children may like to write a sentence about their favourite
                 book in each category.

        Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

            1. The children will appreciate differences in purpose and layout between fiction and

                 non-fiction.

            2. They should appreciate that the story of this world is not chaotic because God’s
plans and purposes are being worked out from start to finish.
