                               UNDERSTANDING CONTENTS AND INDEX PAGES

        Truth to Teach (Source)

            Heart concepts: Order, Servanthood

 God has gifted some people with the ability to create order, so that other people
may benefit from what has been done.

 To understand the importance of contents and index in books

        Way to Work (Means)

            1. Review previous lessons.

            2. Present the children with a collection of objects, which can be sorted according to
various criteria. Ask children for suggestions as to how they may be sorted. God has

made our brains in such a way that they will often bring order or create order when
                 faced with a jumble.

            3. Explain that information can be sorted just like the objects. An author has to decide
how the information will be sorted or grouped in the book. He or she has to decide
what the different sections of the book will be and what order they will come in.

            4. Show the children a contents page; once the order of the different sections has been

decided upon then the contents page can be typed up. This page simply lists the
order of the sections in the book, and tells you the page that section begins at. By
reading through the sections, you get an idea of what the book will be about. Look at
the contents pages of several books, some on a similar theme and others on

different themes. Establish that the contents page will always be at the beginning of
                 the book.

            5. Show the children that here is another very useful page at the back of a non-fiction

book. (The index.) Ask children to find the index page in some non-fiction books.

Ascertain what the index is for. (It helps you to find specific things, without having
to read all the way through the list or the book!) It is really another list – the

contents page was also a list. The index is a list of all the different things mentioned
                 in the book.

            6. Remind the children of alphabetical order covered in Y1 and talk about what it
means. Think of ways in which the index could have been arranged. (According to the
