Overview of Y2 Spring Term Part 1
USING GLOSSARIES AND DICTIONARIES
Truth to Teach (Source)
Heart concept: Communication
God is a communicating God, with complete knowledge of all languages. For us
language development is an ongoing process, and an expanding vocabulary can
help to bring about more accurate communication with others.
The use of dictionaries and glossaries
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review previous lessons.
2. Talk about times when people are reading a book on their own and they come across
a new word. It can be missed out or … let the children suggest what to do.
Ask the children if they think that God knows all the words in English and in other
languages. He can communicate with every part of his creation – Jesus even spoke to
the wind and the sea and they heard him!
3. Hopefully, someone will suggest the use of a dictionary. Show a dictionary and
explain its purpose, how the words are arranged, etc
Stress the importance of finding out the meaning of words we do not understand.
Show how to track down the section of words beginning with ‘C’, and then how to
narrow it down to words beginning with ‘CA’.
Explain the purpose of the guide words at the top left and top right hand corners of
the page. Locate the headword of the entry and discover the definition of the word.
(The Dorling Kindersley Children’s Illustrated Dictionary is excellent and
conveniently gives a picture and a guide on how to pronounce the word too.)
4. Look up other words for further practice if necessary.
5. Talk about dictionaries being useful reference books. Correct spelling helps people
to communicate messages more clearly.
6. Discuss times when people are reading an information book with quite a lot of new
words. It can be a bit of a nuisance having to go and look up each one in the
dictionary.
