Truth to Teach (Source)
Welcoming others warmly and graciously is a mark of the Kingdom of God.

The use of Humble ‘e’
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the previous lesson.
2. Talk about the story of when young children were brought to Jesus (show a relevant
picture). Jesus welcomed them. (‘Welcome’ is a doing word!) By doing this Jesus was
showing us that Father God has a huge welcoming heart towards all those who
genuinely seek him.
3. Explain that visitors to our homes are made welcome. We stand up, give them our full
attention and greet them. Discuss if there are not quite enough seats for everybody
to sit down, so a parent may say, ‘Tina, would you mind letting Auntie Jo sit on your
chair, and maybe you could sit on the rug?’ Explain that to show respect to her
parents as well as a warm welcome to Auntie Jo, Tina should give up her seat. Give
time for the children to share their experiences.
4. Talk about Father Alphabet’s family in which one letter child always remembers to get
up to welcome a visitor and to offer the visitor her seat. Her brothers and sisters call
her Humble ‘E’. In fact they’ve made up a rhyme about her. It goes like this: -
Humble ‘E’ is full of grace
And gladly gives to others her place.
5. Explain that doing words often need to have the letters ‘i-n-g’ added on at the end.
This makes words such as jumping, singing, walking and reading.
If a doing word ends in ‘e’, notice what happens. Let’s take the word ‘write’. Write
this word on the board and talk through how Letter E gets up allowing ‘ing’ to be added
to the word. Repeat with several other ‘normal’ examples, e.g. jump, fly, colour, etc.
6. Ask children to complete the relevant worksheet on their own.
