DOING SOMETHING INTERESTING
Truth to Teach (Source)
Proverbs 25:11 ‘A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.’
Like a wise craftsman there is satisfaction to be had in choosing the most suitable
word to fit the purpose.
To discover words to use instead of ‘went’
Way to Work (Means)
1. Try to obtain a tool box to show the children. Explore the contents.
2. Explain that a craftsman is faced with many challenges when making or fixing things
and he needs tools to do a specific job. He will open his box and then choose the
precise tool that he needs. The Bible mentions how God gave wisdom to craftsmen
to make particular things.
3. Talk about words being like tools. Each word communicates a specific meaning.
People are like a craftsman who chooses the best word for a particular situation.
4. Take the doing word ‘went’. Talk about stories which use the word ‘went’. E.g. “We
went to Grandma’s.” “We went to London.” We went home.” ‘Went’ is a very general
word. Explain that there are other more interesting and precise words which could
be used.
5. Suggest that the children play a game in which someone has to go across the room
(or down the corridor) in a certain way. Whisper to that person how he/she should
go by giving him/her a more precise doing word which he/she has to act out. The
others try to guess what the word was. Possible words might be: -
marched ran limped drove jogged danced
strolled skipped staggered cycled strode plodded
6. Gather back together again and with the help of the children list all the words used
in the game. God is precise in what he says. He wants to help us to be good
communicators too. We have to learn to choose our words carefully, like a craftsman
choosing tools for a specific purpose.
