Overview of Y2 Spring Term Part 1
In a sentence, naming words, doing words and describing words are a bit like the
pillars. They have an important job to do in telling us who or what the message is
about and what happens. But they alone don’t give us the full message. Something
more is needed.
4. Give an example. Write on the board:-
basket lay fluffy kittens.
Identify the doing word, the naming words, and describing word. Help the children to
appreciate that the meaning of several parts is unclear.
We know that the kittens were lying somewhere, but where exactly?
Where were the kittens? In / on/ under/ beside the basket?
Which basket was it? The/this/that/my/your basket?
Which kittens? The/my/ your/ our fluffy kittens.
5. Establish that the sentence should read: -
In the basket lay the fluffy kittens.
Identify the doing word, the naming words, and describing word. Underline/ ‘back’
these in red, blue, and green respectively.
Explain that the other words are linking words. Underline/ ‘back’ them in orange.
Linking words link the key words in a sentence and help the meaning to get across.
The message is complete. The sentence is complete and we are left in no doubt as to
what is meant.
Perhaps draw this as follows:-
In the basket lay the fluffy kittens.
6. Give out the worksheets and have the children underline the first sentence. Quick
finishers can colour the pictures until everybody can be gathered again for the
second sentence.
