Overview of Y2 Spring Term Part 1
MORE LINKING WORDS
Truth to Teach (Source)
In a team every member has significance and purpose.
To identify more linking words.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the previous lesson, remembering the heart concept as well as the academic
concept of a linking word.
2. Have each word of a suitable sentence (*see below) written on pieces of white paper.
Have pieces of coloured paper, larger than these, for each type of word. (Blue for
naming words, red for doing words, green for describing words and orange for linking
words.)
Spread the first sentence on the carpet. Involve the children in identifying the doing
word in the sentence first. Have a child put a piece of red paper under it in the
sentence.
3. Then identify the naming words and ‘back’ these in blue.
4. Then identify any describing words, explaining that not all sentences have these.
Back these in green.
5. Finally identify the linking words, backing these in orange.
6. Ask children to complete the worksheet. (**See below.)
* Avoid sentences with a personal pronoun as the subject or object or both. For
example, don’t use sentences such as ‘I love jam’ or ‘He likes her’. You might like to
use the sentences on worksheet, or model your sentences on them.
** This activity is challenging for some children. Individual help and encouragement will
be needed.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children should become aware of linking words (words other than naming words,
doing words and describing words) and to recognise these in sentences.
