Overview of Y2 Spring Term Part 1
                                      INTRODUCTION TO LINKING WORDS

        Truth to Teach (Source)

 In a team every member has significance and purpose.

                To introduce linking words.

        Way to Work (Means)

            1. Tell the story of when David and his men were away fighting, some raiders came and
attacked his base camp. They captured all the animals and took away wives and

children as prisoners. When David and his men returned, they were very upset. Ask
the children what they think they did.

They prayed and asked God if they should go after these raiders, and God said yes.
So David and 600 men went after them. At one place 200 were so tired they couldn’t

go on any further, so David told them to stay where they were and look after the
               baggage.

David and the 400 continued and God helped them rescue all their people as well as
lots of plunder (treasure, clothes and animals they had taken from the raiders’ camp).
When they returned there was an argument. Some soldiers said the 200 who didn’t
fight shouldn’t have any of the plunder.

David said, ‘No, the share of the men who looked after the baggage is to be the same
as that of those who went into battle. All shall have the same.’

            2. Consider why David decided this. He realised that in a team every person is important

and plays a part. (Maybe the ones with the baggage were praying and that would
have played an important part in how the battle went.) David wanted to teach his men
to love and respect every person in his team.

            3. Explain that in language a sentence is like a team. All the words in the sentence work
together so that the speaker’s message gets across to the listener.

It’s like an old-fashioned bridge. Either draw on the board or show a picture of an

old-fashioned clapper bridge. Point out how the pillars are made first, and then how
flat stones are put on top of these, so that someone can walk all the way across to the
               other side.
