Overview of Y2 Spring Term Part 1
REMEMBER TO DOUBLE THE CONSONANT
Truth to Teach (Source)
Just as keeping God’s law brings great reward (Psalm 119:11), so keeping the laws
inherent in language aids communication.
Knowing when to double the consonant in verbs/doing words
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the previous lessons.
2. Introduce the idea of laws operating all around us, e.g.: -
o Glass of water. Ask what will happen if we pour water out of this glass. It will
spill on the ground, not fly in space, unless I am on the moon, because of the
law of gravity. This is an example of a law God has put into his universe. It’s
comes from God’s wisdom and love, and it creates order too. Imagine how
confusing it would be if sometimes water falls down and sometimes it flies
around.
o Show a picture of a speed limit sign. It is the law of the land that drivers should
not drive faster than 70 miles per hour on the motorway. This is an example of
people agreeing together for the good of all; it’s the law of the land. Once
again it creates order and it also prevents accidents.
o There are also lots of laws to do with how to live. For example, ‘Pride comes
before a fall.’ If you get proud and big-headed, you will have a humbling
experience. The Bible is full of laws like this, and God wants to reward us for
putting the truth of his word into practice. Reinforce that doing so brings
peace.
3. Talk about there being lots of laws regarding the English language. Amazingly our
brain serves us well by keeping these laws or rules and making communication
possible. When it comes to spelling words, it is necessary to learn some rules.
4. Introduce the new spelling rule and rhyme to help remember it. (This convention is
necessary so that the short vowel stays short.)
If a word ends in a consonant (just ONE!)
With a short vowel coming before
Remember to double the consonant
Before adding anything more
