Overview of Y2 Spring Term Part 1
Show an information book with a glossary at the back. There are fewer entries. The
words are in alphabetical order again. Some books may even have words in bold
type in the main text of the book as an indication that there is a relevant entry in the
glossary.
Look up some unfamiliar words in the glossary of a book.
7. Make simple dictionaries available to the class. Write a selection of words on the
blackboard, eg camel, kangaroo, bear, zebra, elephant, tiger. Ask the children to find
each of these words in their dictionary and write down one sentence from the
appropriate entry. It may be the definition of the animal or a sentence containing
the animal.
8. Encourage the continued use of glossaries and dictionaries in the classroom to
foster an attitude in the children of taking responsibility for increasing their
knowledge of words.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children will understand the purpose of glossaries and dictionaries as well as the
logic of how the information is presented.
2. The children will appreciate the uniqueness of God in his complete knowledge of all
languages and in his ability to communicate clearly with his creation.
3. They will realise that children and adults alike have a part to play in expanding their
vocabulary.
