INTRODUCING DOING WORDS
Truth to Teach (Source)
God is living and active and he has made us able to do many things too, which is
reflected in the wealth of doing words in our language.
Review and reinforcement of verbs/doing words
Way to Work (Means)
1. Present a plethora of doing words! The following are some suggestions for you to
choose from: -
o show a picture which is full of action for the children to comment on;
o lead an exercise routine and then list all the things you had to do;
o show a clip from the Visual Bible in which a paralyzed person is healed.
(An old lady healed by Jesus in Matthew; the man at the Beautiful Gate by Peter and
John in Acts.) What did the person do when he/she was healed?
2. List the doing words on the board. A doing word is something you do – e.g. run, jump,
hop, laughed, clapped. If you add ‘ing’ on to the end of it, and it makes sense - e.g.
laughing, running, jumping, clapping – it’s a doing word.
Distinguish from naming words by explaining that you can’t hold a ‘hop’ in your hand,
like you can hold a ‘clock’ or other naming words. (At this stage avoid abstract nouns.)
3. Talk about God not being a statue which cannot see or hear or move. (See Isaiah
44:17-18; Isaiah 46:7) God is living and active. Discuss what God can do. (He can
see, hear, feel, think, answer, heal, work, etc – more doing words!) God has made us
able to do lots of things. Create a list on the board.
4. Have a selection of doing words (use the infinitive form without endings, i.e. ‘run’
rather than ‘running’ or ‘ran’) written on slips of card, along with some naming words
and describing words. Spread these face-down on the carpet, and have the children
pick one up in turn, read it and set it under the appropriate heading until all are
sorted. Have the headings written on the appropriate colours of card:-
naming words - blue;
describing words – green;
doing words – red.
