5. Discussion
Based on the data we have collected through conducting a survey to our SKIS
students, we were able to analyze that the majority of them preferred the reduction
of the disposable plastic usages through “regulation of the use in industrial level”.
In addition, according to Ms. Chalsea, our school geography teacher, we were able
to learn about the top-down method which limits peoples’ consumption of plastics
primarily by restricting the actual production of plastic materials. Since the majority
of the public preferred the regulation at industrial level, we were able to assume
that this method will be less controversial, allowing it to be effective and feasible.
Next, our research team was able to assume that the publics are most likely to be
aware of the seriousness of the use of plastic bags in supermarkets since the 76
percent of our respondents preferred the regulation or replacement of plastic bags
used in supermarkets, while 47.6 percent of the respondents preferred the
regulation on the use of plastic bags rather than replacement of it with the paper
bags. Based on these data, we were able to assume that people feel least
uncomfortable with the absence of plastic bags in supermarkets. The reason we
analyzed about why the people preferred the regulation on the use of plastic bags
rather than replacement of it was since the groceries are sometimes cold, water is
generated due to the condensation making the paper bags less useful. In addition,
some grocery items turned out to be too heavy for paper bags. To this end, we
were able to conclude that the absence of the utility (elasticity, water resistance,
and lightness) of the plastic is not yet replaceable by other materials.
Based on acquired data and analysis, our research team concluded that the people
prefer to have regulation on the use of plastic bags because they are least
uncomfortable with the absence of the plastic bags in supermarkets and paper
bags cannot fully replace the benefits of the plastic bags.
