confirmed the effect of these regulations as they have gathered promising data of
many cafes in Korea using paper straws, biodegradable straws, or drinkable lids
without straws. In addition, the policy focusing on the overuse of plastic bags has
been implemented. Korean government revised this law and banned the use of
plastic bags in supermarkets. It has since proved to be an effective measure as
there was a significant decrease in the consumption of plastic bags. Statistically,
the government’s goal is to stop at least 13,000 places in South Korea from using
disposable plastic bags. Evidence suggests that widely known franchised bakeries
such as Paris Baguette and Tous Les have successfully played a part in achieving
this goal by charging consumers for their disposable plastic bags, which were one
of the biggest culprits in plastic consumption the year before with a record of 230
million plastic bags used. This is because the extra charge encouraged many
consumers to bring their own reusable shopping bags instead of using the plastic
bags provided.
To this end, through the research on the regulations of Korea and Singapore,
our team was able to find that both countries are adopting the top-down
method;they are trying to control the industrial manufacture of the plastic products,
to regulate the use of the plastic products at consumer level. Based on the literature
review, our research team decided to use quantitative and qualitative method to
find the most ideal solution among the contrived solutions.
The solution consists of the targeting two main products, plastic straws and
plastic bags. For each target product, we considered introducing eco-friendly
alternatives, and hence, emphasizing the necessity of the regulation of plastic
production in plastic usage prominent areas. These come in the form of three
options.
i. Regulate the use of plastic bags in supermarket
ii. Replace the plastic straws with paper straw
iii. Replace the plastic bags with recyclable paper bags
