Just then, Abigaile appears from the shadows, running toward them with her usual boundless energy.
Gelia tries to stop her, but the little girl rushes straight to Javi, smiling up at him.
Abigaile:
"Mr. Policeman! You came back!"
Javi looks down at her, his heart aching. She’s just a kid, but she’s already been forced to live in hiding,
in fear of people like him. Yet she looks at him like he’s her hero, completely unaware of the weight he
carries.
Javi: (kneeling down, forcing a smile)
"Yeah, I did."
Abigaile:
"I knew you would! You’re different from the other policemen."
Javi glances at Gelia, who is watching him with a mixture of suspicion and hope.
Abigaile: (innocently)
"Are you going to help us, Mr. Policeman?"
Javi doesn’t answer right away. He knows the road ahead is dangerous, possibly fatal. But as he looks
into Abigaile’s bright, trusting eyes, he feels something stir inside him—a resolve he hasn’t felt in a long
time.
Javi: (softly)
"Yeah, kid. I’ll help you."
Gelia tenses at his words, but she doesn’t argue. For the first time, she allows herself to hope that
maybe, just maybe, Javi is telling the truth.
Gelia: (cautious, but hopeful)
"If you’re serious about helping us, you need to be careful. The government doesn’t take rebellion
lightly. And you’ll need to decide quickly where your loyalties lie."
