In that celebrated reliability trial, the cross-country race, Lilley and
Wentworth shared honours, each having twenty-two of the first sixty
home. We congratulate long-winded Wentworths who have again
established a new record. We came second in the boys’ inter-house
tennis losing by only five games to Wentworth. Our champion player
was Douglas McKercher, who captained the School’s “A” team to
victory and David Young and Peter Banney were our other school
representatives.
Once again Lilley House came to the fore; this time in cricket. We
both our matches, which were played on a concrete wicket at
Kitchener Park. Griffith provided the stronger opposition and our
winning margin was only six runs. The re-introduction of House
cricket this year proved very popular and we hope that these matches
will be continued in the future.
At the time of writing these notes the Intermediates have not
started their House matches, but with the success behind them of
winning last year they are hoping to do well again this season. We
should like to congratulate our two rivals, Wentworth and Griffith
Houses; Wentworth for their successes, and Griffith for their good
sportsmanship which, despite many disappointments they maintained
throughout the year.
On behalf of all the members of Lilley House, the captains sincerely
thank their House teachers who certainly put a great deal of time and
effort in preparing us for our various activities.
And last, but not least, thank you, vice-captains, Ruth Clarke and
Don Hay, who have done so much to help, and received so little acknow
ledgment for it.
Best of luck, Lilley House, in years to come !
WENTWORTH HOUSE
House Captains : Marjorie Brown, Alan Evans.
This year has been quite a good year in Wentworth House, with
members acquitting themselves well in, each competition.
Our sincere congratulations to Lilley and Griffith Houses, Lilley for
being our main worry and Griffith for being so sporting in defeat.
The swimming was the first event of the year. We came second to
Lilley, losing by 2 points. Outstanding members who gained many
points for the House were Glenice Martin and M. Hauck, who were
senior girl and junior boy, respectively. The boys did particularly well,
gaining the majority of the boys’ points.
In the Inter-House Football our A team went down to superior
teams from the other Houses, but our B team won easily. The girls
played basketball while the boys attempted football and did quite well,
but Lilley won again.
After this unusual start Wentworth warmed up and won the
inter-house sports, with boys and girls both outstanding. In the girls,
Lorraine Hillier was minor champion and Marjorie Lee junior champion.
In the boys, M. Kelly and T. Mischlewski tied for minor championship.
All these did exceptionally well in their sprints.
As happened last year in the cross-country three Wentworthites
filled the first three places. Ralph Railings set a new record breaking
the one he set last year. Of the total points we tied with Lilley gaining
22 out of the possible 60.
N. Wright, B. Costello, W. Davies and R. Railings easily won the
boys’ inter-house tennis. The girls’ tennis is yet to be played, but with
