                                 FOOTBALL
In the State Secondary School fixtures, Wynnum fielded three teams,
extending over the widest possible range of weights so as to give each
boy, irrespective of his size, the opportunity of playing against boys of
approximately the same size and strength. Under this arrangement,
smaller boys are not debarred from continuous training and from
competition—playing in the League code of football during the years
          when they are growing up.
                                     FIRST XIII.
Under the captaincy of R. Wren, this year’s First XIII., improved
considerably on the performances of last year’s team. Apart from the
fixtures played, the team met Cavendish Road in a curtain-raiser to
the New Zealand-Queensland match at the Cricket Ground. Members
of the team were : R. Wren (capt.), P. Monks, C. Mitchell, A. Evans,
          G. Edwards, A. Klaikalietis, G. Maynard, P. Hamilton, D. Jaffrey, R.
          Bielenberg, G. Grijth, S. Napier, D. Whitty, R. Railings, C. Stobert.
Of the fixtures played, four matches were won (V. Salisbury,
Indooroopilly, Banyo, Salisbury) and four were lost (V. Cavendish Road,
Banyo, Industrial and Indooroopilly). In all cases Wynnum proved to
be a strong opponent not to be taken lightly.
                                   8st. 71b. TEAM.
This year, the High School 8st. 71b. team had a very successful
season. Once again, Mr. Hazell did an excellent job in coaching the
boys, and as a result, they became runners-up in the premiership to
Banyo. This team was fortunate in having Henry Lenz represent
Wynnum in the Brisbane-New South Wales game, played under flood
light at the Exhibition Grounds. Other schools competing in this
division were Cavendish Road, Cleveland, Salisbury and Industrial.
This team was led by Neville Smith, who played an important part
in each game. The most improved player was Robert Martin, the best
players being Clive Barr, Henry Lenz and Brian Paroz in the backs and
Ernie Taylor (vice-captain), Robert Martin and Dennis Mee Lee in the
          forwards.
The highest scorer for the season was Robert Martin with 17 points.
Team record : Played 5 games. Won 4. Lost 1—62 points for and
          31 points against.
7st. 71b. HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL XIII.
We started the season well by defeating Salisbury 6-0, but were
narrowly defeated by Mitchelton. Both of these games were trial games.
In the first match of the premiership we lost a hard game to
Banyo. Our next match against Cavendish Road gave us a comfortable
win by 14 points to nil, and we went on to defeat Salisbury by 9-0.
Alas ! Like Julius Caesar, there came the day when we “fell ”. On
that day, the Mitchelton “Giants” defeated us by a fairly wide margin.
Our next match saw us lose a good game to Industrial, 9-nil,
and our last game against Kedron was abandoned owing to rain.
              J. Barr (capt.), R. Kydd, D. Mitchell, D. Augusand, L. Amiet were
          our outstanding players.
We extend our congratulations to the premiers and look forward
to a good season in 1957, and with eight of our present team being still
under 7st. 71b., we could even be in the final.
                            INTERMEDIATE RUGBY LEAGUE.
