Chapter Four

Is Happiness the Goal in Life?

MY PARENTS LATER moved back to San Antonio so that my
dad could start a new job. I later decided to take Nicole and
Nick and move to San Antonio, too. I wanted to leave Steve

because of our fights and the “rock-n-roll lifestyle,” of
recreational partying and chaos. I had become good friends
with one of Steve’s platonic girlfriends, Carrie. She decided
to move to San Antonio also, so we became roommates. I

helped her get a job working with me at a mortgage company.
The four of us lived in a two-bedroom apartment that was
less than 10 minutes from work. Nicole was six years old;
Nick was two. I was twenty-four.

I soon began dating a Navy guy for a few months, but

he had to move due to being in the military. I never thought
I’d see him again. His name was Wes. Carrie moved out
around that time. Soon after, Steve drove to San Antonio
asking me to get back with him, so I let him move in with me.
We made some friends in the apartments. Sam, Bobby, and
Charlotte. We began to hang out with them on a regular

basis, so we became best friends with Sam and Charlotte.
