Chapter Twenty-Three








                It’s  three  ho urs  later  and   after  ten  o’clock  when  I  make  it  back  ho me.
                I   stayed    with   Allysa   for   ano ther   ho ur   after   R yle   lef t   and    then   went
                back to my offic e  to fini sh  up a few  thi ng s so tha t I don’t ha ve  to go in
                for  the   nex t  two  days.  Whenev     er   R yle  ha s  a  day  off,  I  try  to  coinc ide

                my own  days off with  hi s.
                    The    light s   are   off   when   I   walk   thro ugh   the   front    door,   so   tha t
                mea ns  R yle  is alrea dy in  bed .
                    The    ent ire   drive   ho me   I   tho ught    about   wha t   he’d    said.   I   wasn’t
                ex pec ting    thi s   conv ers ation   to   come   up   so   soon.    I’m   almost   twent y-

                fiv e,    but   I   ha d   it   in   my   hea d   it   would   be   at   lea st   a   couple   of   yea rs
                bef ore  we  started   trying   for  a  family.  I’m  still  no t  cert ain  I’m  rea dy  for
                it  yet,  but  kno wing   it’s  no w  somet hi ng   he  want s  somed ay  has  put  me
                in  an  inc red ibly ha ppy mood.
                    I  decide  to  make  mysel f  a  quick  bite  to  ea t  bef ore  waking   hi m  up.  I
                ha ven’t  ha d  dinner     yet   and   I’m  star ving .  When   I  flip  on  the   kitchen
                light ,   I   screa m.   My   ha nd    goes    to   my   ches t   and    I   fall   agains t   the

                count er. “Jes us Chri st, R yle!  Wha t are  you doing ?”
                    He’s  lea ni ng   with  hi s  back  agains t  the  wall  nex t  to  the  ref rigera tor.
                His   fee t   are   crossed    at   the   ank les    and    hi s   ey es    are   na rro wed    in   my
                direc tion.  He’s flipping  somet hi ng  over  in  hi s fing ers , staring  at me.
                    My  ey es   fall  to  the  count er  to  hi s  lef t  and   I  see  an  em pty  glass  tha t
                probably  rec en tly  hel d  scotch.  He  drink s  it  on  occasion  to  hel p  hi m

                fall asleep .
                    I   look   back   at   hi m   and    the re’s   a   smirk   on   hi s   face.    My   body
                ins tant ly  grows  warm  at  tha t  smile  bec ause  I  kno w  wha t  comes   nex t.
                Thi s   apartmen t     is   about   to   bec ome   a   frenz y   of   clothes    and    kisses .
                We’v e  chri stened   nea rly  ev er y  room  sinc e  we  moved   in  here,   but  the
                kitchen  is one  we  ha ven’t tackled  yet .
                    I smile  back at hi m, my hea rt still bea ting  erra tically from the  sho ck

                of find ing  hi m here  in  the  dark. His ey es  fall to hi s ha nd , and  I no tice
