Walworth Castle & DurhamA journey through the ancient countryside of northern England, visiting Wensleydale by heritage rail and uncovering County Durham and Northumberland.6 DAYS from%u00a3749ppDays 1-2. Walworth Castle and discovering DurhamYour holiday begins at the grand setting of Walworth Castle in Darlington, County Durham, where we meet the Tour Manager. This dignified castle is an ideal base for a holiday that delves into the history of the north of England. Built in the 12th century, this striking castle hotel is set among 18 acres of stunning grounds and is our historic home for the next five nights. A fascinating guided tour of Durham awaits on Day 2. Our tour takes in the Romanesque cathedral, 11th-century castle and the Town Hall in the Castle and Cathedral complex which boasts UNESCO World Heritage status. This afternoon is free to continue exploring Durham at your own pace.Days 3-4. Beamish and the Wensleydale RailwayThis morning, we visit the Locomotion Museum in Shildon, the world%u2019s first railway town. The museum tells the story of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, celebrating its 200th anniversary in 2025, and houses several locomotives from the National Collection. Next, we drive to the Beamish Museum, which showcases the region%u2019s history and heritage through reconstructed buildings, exhibits and interactive displays. On Day 4, we set off by coach to discover the Yorkshire Dales, starting with a visit to the Wensleydale Creamery. Look around the museum and watch a cheesemaking demonstration before time in the market town of Hawes. Our coach then takes us to Leyburn to board the Wensleydale Railway to Leeming Bar.Days 5-6. Hadrian%u2019s Wall, Hexham & homeward boundWe visit one of Britain%u2019s most famous monuments today %u2013 Hadrian%u2019s Wall, built by the Romans to protect their empire south of the wall. Next we travel by rail to Hexham, via Newcastle, to visit Chesters Roman Fort and Museum. You are free to wander around and learn more about the museum. Later, our coach takes us to Hexham Abbey. Enjoy free time exploring this stunning Grade I listed monastery dedicated to St Andrew. On Day 6, your holiday in historic northern England draws to a close after.
