Fire and Consequential Loss Insurance
(iii) Method of packing - The method of packing is
very important in determining the fire potential
hazard of a material , e.g, hessian wrappings and
sacks are themselves hazardous and conducive to
rapid spread of fires. However, if packed in small
glass or metal containers , may be treated as
hazardous.
(iv) Explosion - Substances which by their nature
or by their method of storage can cause
explosions are included in this category.
(v) Contamination - Some materials like organic
chemicals, though not combustible themselves, can
evolve excessive amount of smoke and noxious
fumes when involved in fire, and can lead to
contamination of other goods not involved in the
fire. E.g, dyes and carbon blacks.
(vi) Interaction with other materials - Many
oxidizing agents such as dichromates ,
permanganates, and some peroxides are non
hazardous till they come into contact with
carbonaceous material when rapid oxidation can
occur with the production of heat and flame.
