(c) Conditions existing between the buildings - Even
if the buildings are not adjoined, the conditions in between
the buildings may also provide exposure hazards.
This feature consists of adjoining buildings, and
buildings not adjoining.
A high building faces more risk than a shorter one. A
single storey house is always safer than a multi storied
building, as
(i) A fire on the lower floor tends to spread more easily
upwards. The presence of floor openings also spread
the fire. Combustible floor materials also accelerate
the fire.
(ii) Water used for extinguishing fire on the upper floors
tend to damage property of the lower ones.
(iii) In the event of an upper floor giving away, additional
weight is thrown on the floors below, which too may
collapse.
(iv) Fire fighting becomes more difficult , not only
because of the inaccessibility to upper floors, the
