preferably devoid of openings. If a door is essential
it should be fireproof.
Areas are small spaces surrounded by buildings. They
may form serious hazard. The area acts as a fuel, and a
raging fire can be easily communicated to the other sides.
Also fire can be transmitted from one floor to other
storeys of a building.
(b) Distance from other buildings - This feature consists
of adjoining buildings, and buildings not adjoining.
Where buildings are adjoined and are of similar heights,
the main risk is of roof exposure. A perfect party wall
extending up to an adequate distance above the roof is
the best protection against this form of exposure.
Where buildings are not adjoined, the fire resistance of
the construction materials of the building, better
protected doors and windows (fire proof) , the hazards
of the occupation, heights of buildings and closeness
matter the most.
