(vii) Toxicity - Toxic substances must often be
classed as hazardous as they can hamper fire-
fighting, or contaminate the other materials like
foodstuffs.
(viii) Difficulty of fire extinguishment - Generally,
when the fire cannot be extinguished by water, the
goods are deemed hazardous. Some materials can
hamper fire fighting through the evolution of
smoke and fumes.
Some goods of high calorific value like rubber, are also
considered hazardous owing to the fact that fires in
such materials burn with great intensity and require
huge amount of water to extinguish the fire.
Acids and other corrosive substances are also deemed
hazardous as they spoil other materials and pose
problem to fire fighters.
The degree to which many of these factors play their
part determines the classification.
