The following Oliver story shows how important it is to assess a
person's inner drivers and motives.
"Thinking is not your thing!"
Like most people, I had to struggle with prejudices, categorizations and
pigeonholing at an early age. I don't want to exclude that I also tend to
pigeonhole people from time to time. As is well known, one should
always look at one's own nose first ...
When I was building my Abitur, I wanted to get involved in the
organization, planning and execution of the Abitur ceremony.
Moderating the event, that was "my thing". In addition, I wanted to
participate in the design of the Abitur newspaper and write an essay on
the history of my school.
My friends were very enthusiastic about my idea of being a moderator.
It was a different story when it came to my involvement as a screamer:
"Theory, Olli? Intellectual high-performance sport? That doesn't suit
you!" The whole thing culminated in the not only humorously meant
remark: "Thinking, that's not your thing, Olli!" And when I later decided
to study psychology, it was again:
"You have to study business, something dry as dust. But psychology?
That's really not your thing!"
From that point on, at the latest, it was clear to me that pigeonholing
must be avoided in human relationships. Away with the templates.
Every person is unique and an individual, and therefore worthy of
intensive attention to their emotions, values and convictions. In doing
so, it is not a matter of outward appearances. The crucial thing is to get
to the bottom of the inner drivers. It is worthwhile to find out which
