Vogelhuber, Scheelen - What people really want
can never change and never bring anything in life to a good end in a
structured and planned way!"
Who knows who he is, can also change
Oliver's insight into the importance of self-knowledge came at a
later stage, but still earlier than in other people, who until old age
cannot move away from the following conviction: "That's just the
way I am, I can't change, nobody can ask that of me!"
The story also shows that Oliver didn't want to be like his
father. We are all familiar with this generational conflict. And
the father was of the opinion that the son would probably never
be able to change. But if it's true that we can't change our
personality, can't work on it: What use is the knowledge of
who we are when it comes to improving our relationships with
other people? In conversation and in contact with other people,
we could then only ever make sure to do as little damage as
possible.
Not all, but many personality psychologists, however, make
different assumptions, at least as far as the possibilities of
human change are concerned. Accordingly, a personality is
composed of numerous different personality traits, which
cause us to perceive and describe people as different or
similar. We can assume that the personality of a person is
formed by the interaction of innate dispositions, the
environment, socialization influences, and the development of a
person's personality.
