After canceling the party for the third time, I realized it was not
God's order, no matter how much I wanted to take care of Daddy. In
the end, I knew he would be better off staying in Kinston. He had
much more of a support system than I could ever offer him. He ruled
the town, after being a retired policeman and city councilman, some
people were checking on him daily. There was always traffic in and out
of his condo. He remained in Kinston and his health turned
completely around again. By then Daddy had been on kidney dialysis
for ten years and had two knee replacements, but he kept on pushing.
He knew I could not handle him leaving me at this point. Leroy also
felt I had tricked him into getting back into the house based on
Daddy's health. He just did not understand I had nothing to do with
it. It was all God's plan.
Now that the decision had been made for Daddy to remain in
Kinston, I began to focus again on getting financing for the business.
By October, we were still robbing Peter to pay Paul just to meet
payroll. I was not quite sure how we would meet payroll in November.
I had always promised myself I would do all I could to never miss a
payroll. I knew how that felt when my first paycheck had bounced at
Cox.
By this time, the housing market was beginning to boom in
Maryland and our house had doubled in value. I was getting desperate
with November’s payroll coming up and decided to approach crazy
Leroy to see if we could pull some additional equity out of the house
to stabilize the business. We already had a credit line attached to the
