emergence of the Indonesian Muslim intellectual into four
groups. The first is the fundamentalist groups, those who sup-
ported the rigid and pure commentary on Islamic teaching, anti
secular thinking, anti Western and traditional belief syncretism,
and more giving priority on the religious activities than poli-
tics. The second is the reformist groups, those who more giving
priority on the religious activities than politics, but they more
willingly to cooperate with the secular groups on the basis of
