“The Chartering Group”
Laurel, MD - The Top Teens of America – Patuxent River Chapter “TTAPRC” inducted 17 teens to begin their journey as part
of this wonderful and growing organization. The Teens, parents, and especially the Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc – Patuxent
River Chapter “TLODPRC” were all very excited to begin cultivating our Teens as leaders.
Since the first meeting in January, the Teens were so excited and started planning their first round of activities to become
acquainted with each other. They are participating in workshops to learn about the M.O.M.E.N.T.U.M. Program and developing
activities that would meet the Program Thrusts and Projects. In just a short time, TTAPRC has been busy with activities during
the year.
TTAPRC entertained the Senior Citizens at the Fairland Senior Center with playing games, discussing hobbies, working on jigsaw
puzzles, and much more. The residents were so delighted to have them there to add a little sunshine to their day. Along with the
ladies of TLODPRC, they participated in a day of service in Montgomery County Volunteer Center in MD making cards for the
seniors and engaging in other activities of the day.
During Black History Month “BHM”, some of the Teens had the chance to meet some of the past and present members of the
Harlem Globetrotters. The players showed them a few of their older and new court maneuvers and signed autographs. In
addition to that activity for BHM, a group of our Teens gathered to watch a screening of the movie, Black Panther. This activity
had a dual purpose of not only being a social activity, but a chapter bonding session as well.
In our inaugural year, TTAPRC participated in the 2018 March of Dimes – March for Babies Walk and surpassed our goal of
$500 and raised $1,067. We also, did a virtual walk for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital raising $400. Chipotle
sponsored Top Teens Day in which the chapter raised over $800 which will assist with planning community service activities.
Overall, it was a wonderful year for TTAPRC. The Teens themselves are very active in other service organizations at school and
church. We have several dancers that participated in numerous recitals during the school year; a Teen poet who won third place
in the NAACP ACT-SO Writing competition; a competitive ice skater; an animator; school ambassadors/peer counselors, and so
much more talent within the chapter. We look forward for the next year and will become a strong presence within Area II.
