labour-intensive, but it works if you work it, and the programme has been
very successful.
Also, some of the products contain everyone’s favourite sugar replacement
chemicals that we find in all diet soft drinks and non-nutritive sweeteners:
aspartame, which contains phenylalanine. Research suggests that they are
bad for your health (probably just as much as normal refined sugar), and they
have been linked to lifestyle diseases such as lupus and Alzheimer’s. Personal
note from Rob: sugar-free drinks give me a headache, so it’s not something
my body likes at all. But, to each his own.
Our take on the matter
Research has also shown that non-nutritive sweeteners containing
phenylalanine actually make you hungry, so be careful what you combo the
food with, and check the labelling for use of aspartame.
If you take a look at Mary Holroyd (founder of the company), she is still a
blonde bombshell knockout at her age. She has been at goal weight for many
years. What we most like about her is that she advocates weight loss over
time – if you took a year to put it on, it will take you more than two weeks to
lose it. She believes that weight loss is a strategy linked to goals, and she
talks in years, not days or weeks.
Not surprisingly, she is anti-Banting, although she also believes sugar is evil
incarnate. But there is no denying that her programme works, and after
more than 40 years, she has done the work to perfect it.
