Chapter 9: Vegetarian & Vegan
Some people do it for health reasons; some people do it for moral reasons.
We have friends and family in both camps.
One of our vegan friends disavows eggs, which she refers to as “chicken
period” (LOL). She is also anti-milk, and posted on Facebook once how cows
are mistreated in the way milk is extracted. Instead she drinks soy milk or
milk made from almonds.
Now another one of our naughtier family members has a fridge magnet up
that proclaims, “Meat is murder. Delicious, tasty murder.” His ex-girlfriend
used to give her daughter two-minute noodles to take with her to school for
lunch, but remove the seasoning, “Because it is full of MSG and other
preservatives.” We know some people who would kill her for even giving her
daughter two-minute noodles because they are practically poison. Don’t
worry – she survived and has finished her Honours degree at university.
We have also put pescatarian into this category, i.e. someone whose only
source of meat is fish. Fish is high in essential fatty acids, and is much leaner
than either chicken or beef.
The magic bullet
We actually discussed this section of the book with our vegan friend, who
gave us some useful insights. She draws a distinction between “gourmet
raw” and “junk” vegan – just because someone is vegan, does not make
them healthy. They could be pigging out on junk food that is vegan-based and
still be gaining weight and looking like dreck.
The biggest culprit here is processed carbs – which can still be vegan friendly,
but are not conducive to weight loss. This is where ‘junk’ vegan rears its ugly
