Also, if we look at the shape of our teeth, there seems to be evidence that
man is, indeed, omnivorous (and by ‘man’ we mean ‘human,’ so that includes
the girls). For that reason, from an evolutionary perspective, the sharp
incisors and front teeth, and the flat molars at the back, suggest that we were
designed to eat meat. You may beg to differ. More on that later.
This programme can also be pricey. Raw honey is over R100 a jar. Almond
milk is at least double the price of normal milk. Cashew nut butter – delicious
anyway – is ridiculously expensive. That delectable choc mousse made with
raw cacao and avocado, is hell on the budget.
Finally, vegan and vegetarian can also be cumbersome from a time
perspective. It takes time and effort to prepare wholesome foods, as
opposed to rushing out and buying a pizza in 20 minutes. Our own dinner
meal eating plan below will take you 2 hours to make. So unless you intend to
perennially snack on carrot sticks, being “good” with your vegan/vegetarian
diet will cost you time and money.
Our take on the matter
If your convictions lead you down this road, then you must listen to your
soul and obey. You are the master of your own life, so far be it from us to
dictate to you how to live it!
Ironically, vegetables can be at both the low-end and the high-end of the
pricing spectrum. Walk into Food Lovers or the local green grocer, and you
can pick up a packet of carrots for under R10 (June 2018). But pop into
Woolies and buy something veggie-esque that’s been sliced ‘n’ diced for you
and beautifully packaged, and you’ll practically blow half a month’s salary.
