The Verdon Library
One of the privileges of being a member of Janet Clarke Hall is use of its extensive and valuable
library. In 1897, Janet Lady Clarke began the collection and named it after her friend, Sir George
Verdon, who was a generous benefactor of the College. Today, the Library serves as a
supplement to the University of Melbourne Library services and as a source of materials for the
tutorial system and beyond. Currently the library holds books onsite and in retrievable, offsite
storage. Due to their importance to the academic life of the College, the library resources are
only available to current JCH students, Tutors and staff and should not be taken off site by
students without permission. From time-to-time, the library staff will offer special programs and
events related to books, culture and College history.
Searching for and Borrowing Books
The JCH Library resources are accessible via an online catalogue, Liberty. To search for a
resource, go to http://library.jch.unimelb.edu.au and type either a title, author’s name or any
other keyword in the search bar and press enter. Please ask the Librarian or Student Library
Assistant for assistance if you need help searching for resources.
When a short bibliographic citation of your record appears on the screen, it displays the
resource’s Dewey call number (e.g., 947.084 SHE). To help you locate your resource on shelf, refer
to the following list:
● Verdon Library: 0-499
● Betty Wilmot Room: 500-699
● May Dunn Room: 700-799, CDs, DVDs
● Bage: 800-899 (Fiction)
● Tutorial Room 1: 900+
Please refer to any notes in the rooms for more information regarding call numbers. If you cannot
find a book on the shelf, please contact the resident Student Library Assistant (Carina McCormack
2024) or Librarian, Emily Pyers. If the required resource is stored offsite, please contact the Librarian
via librarian@jch.unimelb.edu.au and quote the requested title and the corresponding call
number. Allow two working days for the request to be processed and delivered to JCH. You will be
notified by email when the requested resource arrives.
To borrow a book, please check it out of the Library using the library catalogue terminal in the
Main Library. Instructions are found to the right of the terminal. If for some reason you encounter
difficulty borrowing materials electronically, there is a register just below the terminal that can be
used to manually borrow materials.
