External door key
All external doors and the front pedestrian gate are linked to a computer which locks and unlocks
these doors automatically. Access to the building can be gained at any time using your external
door key (FOB). These FOB keys are individually numbered and registered in the computer, and
are your responsibility.
You can always leave by these doors when they are locked; you exit by just turning the handle.
The only exceptions are:
● The front door after hours: you need to press the large white button to the left of the doors.
● The front pedestrian gate: you need to press the green button to the left of the gate. This
gate opens automatically. Please do not push or pull this gate.
When you leave College for the mid-year break and at the end of the year, you are required to
return your keys to the College Office. The use of College facilities is not permitted during the
summer break.
Loss of FOB
If you lose your FOB, report the loss to the College Office or Duty Tutor immediately as this is a
significant security risk for everyone in College. For security reasons the FOB will be deactivated
immediately, and it will no longer open the College doors. If you lose your FOB, you will be
charged a $50 replacement fee.
Loss of keys
You should always carry your external key and room key with you when you go out. It is a good
idea to have your contact number listed on your keys. However, do not list your address. This
ensures your keys can easily be located without risking the safety of the College and its residents.
Lost keys must be reported to the College Office – or Duty Tutor after hours – immediately as this
provides a significant security risk for everyone living at Janet Clarke Hall. If you lose your key, you
will incur the full cost for replacement as well as the cost of changing the lock to your room. The
cost to replace lost room keys is ~$250. It pays to develop some good habits about your room key
as it is an expensive business to replace the locks and keys – but better than someone else having
access to your room with a stolen key.
Car access gate
Safety, as well as wear and tear on the car access gate means that it cannot function as a point
of pedestrian access. Unless you have approval to drive into the College, please use the front
gate as your main access.
