Ordering Textbooks
If you require academic resources for your studies that are not currently available at JCH’s Verdon
Library or that are in high demand, please send through a request to the Librarian using the JCH
Library Book Request Form found on the library catalogue’s homepage under the heading,
“Ordering a Textbook.” Depending on the resource and the time of year, textbook requests may
take several weeks to complete. Please do not delay ordering materials to the last moment. You
will be notified by email when your requested textbook arrives. Note that students are expected
to share College textbooks equitably among fellow students.
Copyright Compliance
Please ensure that when making copies of printed editions or downloading digital material that
you do so in accordance with copyright legislation, Copyright Act 1968.
It is a “fair dealing” to make a reproduction for research or study, of one or more articles in a
periodical publication for the same research or same course of study or, for any other work, of a
reasonable portion of a work. For a published work in hardcopy form that is not less than 10 pages
and is not an artistic work, 10% of the number of pages, or one chapter, is a reasonable portion.
For a published work in electronic form only, a reasonable portion is not more than, in the
aggregate, 10% of the number of words in the work. Please see the Australian Copyright Council’s
“Fair Dealing: What Can I Use Without Permission?” and “Research or Study” information
guidelines for further clarification, available online or in hardcopy near the photocopier in the
Library.
Magazines and Newspapers
The Library subscribes to a number of magazines (current titles are listed on the library catalogue
homepage) which are kept in the LIbrary. Please return magazines to the Library when you have
finished reading them. Newspapers are delivered daily and placed in the Dining Hall during
breakfast. Please do not remove papers from the Dining Hall or Junior Common Room as many
members of the College are avid readers and expect to find them there. You can often find
students collaborating over a crossword at breakfast or afternoon tea!
Academic Research
If you have any questions about citation styles, paraphrasing, plagiarism, and research
methodology or are struggling to find relevant resources in the University electronic databases,
please contact Emily Pyers via email (librarian@jch.unimelb.edu.au).
Resident and Non-Resident Tutors are also available to provide guidance in this area.
