Taking Care Outside of the College
Your personal safety off campus is just as important as your personal safety on campus.
Remember these Personal Safety tips:
Taking public transport
• Be aware of your surroundings
• Know your timetable to avoid long waits at train, tram, bus stops – especially if you’re
alone.
• Keep to open, populated areas in full view of tram, bus or train.
• Avoid empty train carriages.
• Share your Uber driver’s details with a friend. Sit in the back seat on the opposite side to
the driver, and do not disclose personal information.
Suggestions to help protect your personal property
• Do not carry originals of important documents such as passports. Carry a certified copy
instead.
• If you carry a bag, keep it close to you.
• Never leave your belongings unattended.
• Don’t openly display valuable electronic equipment, especially at night.
• Back up important documents to a memory device such as a USB, or use cloud storage.
Bicycles
Melbourne is a great place to cycle but you must be aware of the road laws and ride safely. It is
Victorian Law to wear a bicycle helmet when you are riding a bike (even on the University
campus). Follow the rules of the road – cyclists must obey traffic control signs and signals including
red lights and stop and give way signs, stop for trams, and ride in well-lit areas at night.
As bicycles are an easy target for thieves, so make sure you buy and use a good solid lock (i.e., a
D-lock) and record the serial number of your bicycle for both in and outside of the College.
