                                                       CHAPTER 1
                                                 THE FACULTY MEMBER

             1.1.   Rationale
                           The faculty member is the prime mover in the academe. In order to become a truly effective
                and dynamic educational force towards making IFSU an ACE - Academic Centers of Excellence - faculty
                members must work with the administration under an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect, establish
                a friendly and collaborative relations with each other, direct their immediate attention to the student,
                and  interact  and  link  with  the  community.  To  be  effective  and  efficient,  faculty  members  should  be
                aware of their duties and responsibilities, university policies on recruitment, selection, appointment and
                promotion of faculty members, faculty workload, benefits, incentives, privileges and awards, and should
                know  and  be  able  to  implement  academic  processes  and  administrative  procedures  in  the  academe.
                Towards these ends, this Academic Manual of IFSU is promulgated.

             1.2.   Faculty Responsibilities
                    1.2.1.  General
                               Every  faculty  member  of  IFSU  must  strive  to  possess  the  ideal  qualities  of  a  good
                           teacher. A good teacher is:
                       1.2.1.1.  Competent:  He knows his subject matter thoroughly and is interested in his profession.
                                He is a true scholar and never stops studying and learning. He is willing and ready to
                                handle new subjects when called upon and shows openness for intellectual growth.
                       1.2.1.2.  Kind. He  is  humane  and  sociable  and  is  willing  to  attend  to  students’  needs  even

                                outside of class hours. He is polite, tolerant and mature. He is intellectually honest and
                                humble;  willing  to  admit  his  own  shortcomings  and  errors.  He  is  enthusiastic,  and
                                possesses a good sense of humor. He is neat in appearance and orderly in habit.
                       1.2.1.3.  Creative . He is resourceful and uses various methods of teaching and adapting them to
                                the  subject  matter  and  to  his  students.  He  uses  varied  audio-visual  materials  and
                                illustrations.

                       1.2.1.4.  Efficient  and  diligent. He  is  expected  to  be  competent.  He  gives  clear,  varied  and
                                reasonable  assignment  that  will  develop  the  critical  and  creative  thinking  of  the
                                students. He is able to show relationship of class work and subjects to daily life. He
                                speaks clearly and he has no annoying mannerisms.

                       1.2.1.5.  Objective. He  gives  valid  tests  and  grades  accurately  and  fairly.  He  returns  papers
                                promptly,  discuss  them  with  the  class  and  gives  adequate  time  for  review.  He
                                encourages the students to participate in class work and to express their ideas freely
                                and gives them a chance to think for themselves.

                       1.2.1.6.  Student-centered. He  knows  the  students  individually.  He  keeps  the  course  work
                                adjusted  to  learning  capacities  and  comprehension  of  his  students.  He  constantly
                                analyzes errors, does remedial teaching, and individualizes his instructions. He keeps
                                students well informed of their academic standing.
                       1.2.1.7.  God-Fearing individual. He/she must be a spiritual being and faithful to God. He/she

                                assimilate the teaching of God before or after the lesson.


                  1.2.2.   Specific
                       1.2.2.1.  Instruction
                                         Instruction  focuses  on  the  process  of  facilitating  the  acquisition  of
                                knowledge and skills to develop the analytical and creative faculties of learners. It also
                                includes other specific tasks, such as student consultation, academic advising, and all
                                other  initiatives  that  facilitate  the  process  of  learning.  Every  faculty  member  is
                                expected to:
                                1.2.2.1.1.  Identify learners’ needs;
                                1.2.2.1.2.  Prepare and follow a course syllabus based on the needs identified;
