“You stay awake, do you hear me?! Don’t you dare close your eyes! Come

on!” I cry holding my sister.

Behind me I hear Helena use the tower signaling the department we need

backup. She flies over to me and tries to pull me away from Elaine. I can barely

hear her.

“She’ll be okay Kim, medical will reach her soon but we have to push

forward. Can you glitch us to the next checkpoint.”

“I-I can’t.” I murmur.

Helena shakes my arms off Elaine and looks me dead in the eyes. “We all

have to make sacrifices today if it means we won’t have to tomorrow. Medevac

will be here soon and Elaine will be fine, but we have a mission.”

I look at her stunned. Helena had always been a lover more than a fighter

and would save everyone she could even if it meant sacrificing the mission. These

past months have done something to all of us.

“We can’t leave her alone.” I state.

“She’ll be in more danger if we bring her into another battle.” Helena

truthfully explains.

“Hold onto me,” I order and glitch out of the battlefield.

Chapter 13

The second checkpoint is just as chaotic as the last but no mutants can be

seen on the field. Huge blast of bullets lay waste to the landscape trying to find

our hiding places. I can’t tell where it’s coming from.
