8 TELECOMMUNICATIONS

        8.1 OVERVIEW
This report, produced by WSP, contains program and design guidelines relating to the Information Technology infrastructure (ITi)
needs for the 14 @ Irving Project. The recommendations presented in this report are based primarily our experience in planning
                     th
and designing similar “high-tech” mixed use facilities coupled with the latest technology trends and industry best practices.
The overall technology philosophy proposed for the 14 @ Irving project demands that the infrastructure have the technical
                                                     th
flexibility to allow the facility the capability to deliver the highest quality technology today and in the future.
This report describes the telecommunications infrastructure to support the various voice, data and media systems to be deployed
within the new facility. These guidelines address pathways, spaces and cabling designs necessary to sustain various information
transport systems, including a telephone system for voice and voice grade services, local area network (LAN) and wide area
network (WAN) systems, wireless systems, storage area networks (SAN), video distribution, audio distribution and the like.
Specific areas covered by these guidelines are:
            • Definition of the required technology spaces and pathways to house the technology systems and their associated cabling
               infrastructure.

            • Definition of backbone cables between the Main Telecommunications Room(s) and the Telecommunication Rooms located
on each floor and their distribution and termination methods.

            • Definition of horizontal cables and their distribution and termination methods.
            • Definition of patching philosophies and methodologies.
            • Definition of a unified signal grounding (Earthing) system.

        8.2 CODES AND STANDARDS

Applicable portions of the following codes, standards, regulations and recommendations shall be observed in the design of the
telecommunications cabling system, technologies and supporting facilities:
