BRISTOL – Scouting Amer- ica began as the Boy Scouts of America, which made some major changes in its organiza- tion in the past ten years and, in 2019, welcomed girls to take part in its scouting adventures. As a result, 16-year-old Isadora “Izzy” Robert of Hebron is now the first female in Troop 59G to earn the esteemed rank of Eagle Scout.
Izzy, as she likes to be called, grew up with her older brother participating in scouting. Their dad, Jason, was also a leader of local Troop 59 (now known as Troop 59B), so when the two males in her family headed out for a scout meeting or a camping trip, she often got to go along.

camping, fishing, and all of that,” she said.
As a result, she was excited when she could officially Scout America instead of just tagging along with her dad and brother as he worked toward his Eagle
badge.
“It started with me as the
‘lone scout,’ so I got to choose what I wanted to do,” Izzy said. In time, though, some of her friends joined her. They then worked together on things they
wanted to learn, sometimes with the Troop 59B members, sometimes branching off on their own to do activities the boys weren’t interested in. The

A Helmsman In The Wind

It was sometime in the late 1950s. I was a teenager, and Peter was a dozen or so years older. I was on a dock attaching gas can lines to outboard motors while Peter was in the water next to the dock preparing a small sailboat for a glide around New- found Lake.
I asked, “Where are you headed? ”
He responded, “That sorta depends on the wind.”
Peter Brown’s words provide insight into how, in the decades to come, he would respect the natural environment and under- stand the consequence of each person’s interaction with it. Al- though a literal helmsman on “the lake,” over the decades, he would become a helmsman of
