compulsory inspection 850 items are subjected to compulsory inspection.
It establishes labs and test houses throughout the country. Eighty eight
percent of export commodities covering about 1000 items have already
been brought within the purview of this Act.
In september 1991, as part of streamlining and decentralising the
preshipment inspection, the goverment had exempted export houses from
the purview of compulsory preshipment inspection. Besides, it had
exempted industrial units set up in EPZs, FTZs and 100% export oriented
units from the purview of compulsory preshipment inspection.
The Govt. has now authorised units in the sectors of the engineering
products and footwear components enjoying in process quality control
(IPOC) facilities to issue statutory certificates of inspection by themselves.
8. Indian Institute of Packaging: Considering the existing
deficiencies in the standard of packaging for eye appeal and the standards
of packing for safe transit, the Government of India, in collaboration with
the industry, set up the Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP) in 1966. This
organization effects improvement in packaging standards, providing
consultancy services re-organising training activities and rendering testing
facilities in respect of packages. The main objective of IIP is to stimulate
consciousness of the need for good packaging amongst Indian Exporters.
9. Indian Council of Arbitration: The Indian Council of Arbitration
was set up in 1965 as an apex arbitration body by the Govt for promoting
and encouraging amicable settlement of foreign trade disputes with a view
to generating goodwill in the field of foreign trade. The councils objective
include (a) propagation and popularization of the idea of commercial
arbitration in relation to foreign trade; (b) arranging arbitration of disputes
in international trade through its constituent members; (c) maintenance of
panels of persons to act as arbitrators and (d) collaboration with
international organizations and arbitral bodies in matters concerning
international commercial arbitration.
The council also conducts training courses on commercial arbitration.
It also conducts regular meetings at which businessmen, representatives
of Export Promotion Councils, Public Sector Undertakings, Chambers of
Commerce and Trade Associations meet to discuss problem of settlement
of disputes and conduct of arbitration.
10. Federation of Indian Export Organizations: It is an apex body
called the Federation of Indian Export Organizations (FIEO), was set up in
1965 with its registered office in Delhi. This federation is a common and
coordinating platform for the various export organizations including the
Commodity Councils and Boards and the Service institutions and
