The council also conducts market surveys, assists in product
development, sponsors trade delegations and guides newcomers in the
identification of potential markets. The council has established a number
of overseas offices abroad. Outside India, the activities of the council are
primarily geared to the projection of proper industrial image of the country
as also to the publicity of engineering goods with export potential.
Some councils also publish promotional brochures in many languages
for specific products and countries and provides an opportunity to members
to advertise on their internet, on their websites. They will now have to offer
concrete market promotional and consolidation programmes and services
to their members.
2. Commodity Boards: Commodity Boards have been set up in the
development of certain commodities. The commodity board deals with the
entire range of problems of production development and marketing etc.
There are a statutory boards for the following commodities: Handicrafts
and handlooms, silk, powerloom, coffee, coir, rubber, tea, tobacco and
spices they act themselves as if they were the export promotion councils
in respect of commodities concerned. Some of these boards have opened
their branch offices in foreign countries in order to promote the consumption
of the commodities under their jurisdiction. For example, the Tea Board
has set up various promotional units in foreign countries with a view to
organising generic promotional programmes. Similarly , some other boards
have taken promotional measures by opening foreign offices abroad,
participating in trade fairs and exhibitions, conducting market surveys,
sponsoring trade delegations, quality inspection, etc.
3. Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA): This
Authority came into being in September 1972. It was earlier known as
Marine Products Export Promotion Council. It is concerred with
organization, co-ordination, regulation and growth of the export of the marine
products with reference to the quality of material, processing, packaging,
storage, transport, shipment, marketing and attendant investigation.
The Authority is entrusted with the task of ensuring a healthy growth
of the industry through judicious regulation, conservetion and control. The
importers and exporters can obtain any information relating to the markets
and the products from the MPEDA. It has regional offices at major sea
food processing and export centres and a foreign office at Tokyo.
4. Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development
Authority (APEDA): To increase the exports from agricultural sector, the
Processed Food Export Promotion Council started on 12th August 1986,
has been upgraded as Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export
