horrible of me to even come up with such an
outlandish idea! And then you will seek out
people to validate your feelings. You’ll tell them
how offended you are. And you will explain
again just how awful your lot in life is. Once
again, you will soak up whatever sympathy is
available.
In one of Paul Martinelli’s incredible teaching,
he describes the tendency of people to look for
opportunities to be offended as one of the four
pillars of drama. Why would anyone possibly
look to be offended? Simply because there is
something in it for them.
Perhaps this is why Socrates said, “Know
thyself.” The unexamined life is not worth
living. If you are really honest with yourself,
how convenient are your challenges? Are you
prepared to give up these conveniences in order
to move forward with your life?
I was recently on a teaching call with John
Maxwell when he said, “Attitude is not the only
thing, but it is the main thing.” Having the right
attitude is not only essential, it’s foundational.
Whining and complaining will keep you stuck.
